my inbox says "can't open, hasn't enough memory"

thesame is true of deleted files.

all the other folders are ok.

It may help others a bit if you state what your hardware is, what your OS
version is, what version of Office you are using, how much RAM you have,
etc.

it would be the latest version of entourage (just purchased in march)

i've just moved and the programme discs are still in a box... somewhere!

That would be Entourage v X; the latest version was just released a couple
of weeks ago, Entourage 2004. Check the "About Entourage" box under the
Entourage menu, and tell us what the version number is. You may be lacking
some updates.

A little more info: Is this the Inbox folder under "On my computer" or is it
an IMAP inbox?

If it was purchased in March, it isn't the latest version (which was
released nid-may). It is likely to be Entourage vX.

I would suggest that you apply all the relevant updates you can find at
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#OfficeX>, rebuild the database
(hold down the option key when starting entourage), repair permissions and
try again.
