My inbox says (unread only) and deletes read messages completely

My inbox says (unread only) next to it so when I open an email, then go
to another folder be it sent items or junk mail, then go back to inbox,
the already read email is gone without a trace. Not in deleted items,
trash, nowhere.. I have lost many valuable attachments due to this and
for the life of me can't figure out how to change it back.. HELP!

You can toggle the Inbox to show all mail by deselecting Unread only under
the View Menu. The shortcut is command-shift-O.
