I purchased a new computer w/ XP and the Microsoft Works program - which I
thought was the same as Microsoft Office and it isn't. The Works is useless.
I try to send resumes, documents etc in Works format to people using
Microsoft Word -and they can't open the document. The Works program is a
royal pain. Why did you change the extension to .wks which no program can
open except Works? Is there a patch or something I can do to save my
documents in a better format?

No patch. And if you need Office, they you'll have to buy Office. Works is
fine for some people. Although my mom has Word, Works would be perfectly
fine for her. (Office would be overkill.)

You can't blame Microsoft for a false assumption on your part.

Older Works programs you could "save as -- files of type" and scroll down to Word.
Have you tried that in your version?

Sure they can. Word comes with converters for Works, the people who
can't open your documents need only to install the converters, they are
not installed by default.

Most versions of Works allow several different formats for saving files
and you should be able to find that information in the help files.

Works isn't a "royal pain", it's a great suit of programs for people
who don't need the expense and features of Office but like any other
software it requires learning how to use it.
