mysterious deleted messages problem

I manage an email server for about 50 people, I got a phone call today
from one of them, a mac/entourage user using imap to connect to the
server. What the user says happened is that when he deleted a mail, it
deleted the whole day's worth of mail. In trying to find the mails,
several more days of mail got deleted, 6 days in total, at this point
the program froze and refused to respond at all. After a force quit
and restarting the program, all is working well. I had him unhide the
imap messages marked for deletion, which brought back three days worth,
but we are still missing the most recent three days. He can now
recieve, send, delete, and move mails to folders as usual. The user
swears up and down he did nothing out of the ordinary, and I have no
reason to think otherwise, and he also says all messages became lost in
the course of about 6 clicks of his mouse. There are two other
computers in the same office with him, all of them also run entourage
and use my mail server, and he is the only one with the issue. Logs on
my server indicate all is running smoothly.
This is my first experience with entourage, aside from settig the
accounts up about a month ago, but I have used lots of other mail
clients and I have never seen anything like this. fortunately, the
messages he lost are not important, but if I can recover them I would
like to. those messages are not on the server, either. What is much
more important though, is that this doesn't happen again. I read on
the mac website an issue where the database gets reported as wrong
size, but this is supposed to be fixed for his version of os X. It was
end of the day when this happened, so I will not have a chance to go
look until tomorrow, but if there are any ideas as to why this might
have happened or how to undo it, I would very much like some ideas to
track down when I get on site - maybe there is a setting I am not aware
of that allows for deletion of a days worth of mail?
I don't think this is relevant, but I have noticed that entourage
doesn't seem to speak imap so well with my server. All three mac's
running entourage seem to take a long time to log out. typically imap
clients log in, retrieve, and then log out, which I can watch in the
logs. However, the entourage clients, log in, receive, and then hold
the connection for about three minutes before logging out. The reason
I became aware of this is because if the client send/receives during
this period, mail will not be recieved even though I know mail is
waiting. From the point of view of the user, there is no mail, but
from the point of view of the server, the client can't open another
connection and therefor cannot recieve mail that is waiting to be
recieved. the server I run is qmail/courier imap, and I have a full
range of clients connecting, including outlook and outlook express on
windows, mail.app and entourage from mac users, mozilla and epiphany on
linux, and squirrelmail. I cannot see how this could be relevant to
the missing mail issue, but clues are clues and maybe it means
something I am not aware of...
Again, any suggestions are greatly valued...
