need an idea...

I need an idea for a graphic presentation for a current salary within a
salary range. To be more specific, if the current salary is 27,500 and the
applicable range is 25,000 - 32,000, I need a suggestion for graphically
presenting the information.

We're currently using the following formula to present a "^" within a cell
preceeded by a number of " "s.

=REPT(" ",$Q$3*$Q7)&"^"

Q3 contains the width of the cell and Q7 contains a percentage calculation
of the current salary within the range. In this case, it would be
(27,500-25,000)/(32,000-25,000)=35.7%. (The current salary is 35.7% above
the bottom of the range.) Since the cell width is 20, 20*.357=7 and I'd have
7 " "s followed by "^".

This is not a great approach and I need a better idea.

Any suggestions?

I like this:
=REPT(REPT(CHAR(134),4)&" ",INT(A1/5))&REPT("|",MOD(A1,5))

And if I used your formula * 100, it looks pretty nice (well, to me).

=(27500-25000)/(32000-25000)*100

Your characters came through pretty weird.

With a font of Arial, I got a bunch of crosses--much like your were keeping
score--and every five you'd cross through the previous four.

||||
(for 4)
++++
(for 5)

(but they looked prettier in Arial).

The =rept() function only looks at the integer part of your argument.

So when you had something like 17, you'd get
++++ ++++ ++++ ||

(3 groups of 5) + (2 singletons)

Dave,

Thanks for the idea, but I must be missing something.

A1 contains 35.71 and your suggested formula produces:

†††††††††††††††††††††††††††â€

BTW, what's the last part of the formula supposed to do:
=mod(a1,5) [evaluates to .71...]
