Need help figuring out why my file size got so big

I've had several graphic designers helping me with a
presentation where I have to lay 10 images on top of each
other to fake an animation sequence.

In one instance, I got 10 files and my file size was 4.5MB
we had to edit those files and my file size increased by a
MB every time I hit save. My file is now up to 8.5MB and
we used smaller images and more compressed jpeg files than
the first time we had these images in.

Does anyone have an explaination on why my file is so big
and how I can get it back to under 5MB?

A little more information on my file: all of the images in
my file are 96dpi, if I take them down to 72, they get to
blurry to read.

Thanks for your help!

Make sure that allow fast saves is NOT ENABLED under tools>options.
