Need help with formula

I am making up a blood count sheet for a diabetic friend
of mine. I have times of her counts numbering seven times
a day. She may or may not take her count on any one of
those times, and I need a formula that will give me an
average of just the times she has takin her blood count.
I tried =AVERAGE(IF(A2:A7<>0, A2:A7,"")) but it did not
seem to work. I realize that I have to tell it not to
count the "0" in to the average, but shouldn't I have
something in there about the count (number of entires).
Any easy solution would help. Thank you in advance.

=AVERAGE(IF(A2:A7<>0, A2:A7))

and enter this formula as array formula with CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
