Need to switch columns with rows

Carol Ebbinghouse

Hello

I created a spreadsheet of 100 survey responses to over
thirty questions in Excel 2000. Unfortunately, I put the
questions on the rows, so the columns are the survey data.

I can't sort based on rows -- only on columns.

Can anyone suggest how to switch the rows with the columns
while preserving the survey data? Or, in the alternative,
tell me how I can sort data by rows?

The only alternative I can see is to re-key all of the
data.

I have tried pivot--won't work. I have gone through
everything in help and the MSN site's help and
knowledgebase, and have not found anything.

Please help!

Thanking you in advance,

You could do both, so the choice is yours.

Change rows to columns:
Select your *entire* data list.
Right click in the selection and choose "Copy".
Right click in a cell where you would like your revised data to start.
Choose "PasteSpecial".
Click on "Transpose", then <OK>.

Sort by row:
Select your data, then
<Data> <Sort> <Options> button,
Click on "SortLeftToRight", then <OK>.
Choose your sort criteria.

Carol,

Select your range of data (including the headings, if you have any)
Edit->Copy (or ctrl-C)
Select an unused area on your spreadsheet
Edit->Paste Special...
Tick "Transpose", then "OK"

Just cueing in on the above ..
Not really sure whether this'll help here,
but there's an option to select the sort orientation
i.e. sort left to right instead of the normal "top to bottom"

Click Data > Sort > Options button

In the Sort Options dialog,
under "Orientation": select "Sort left to right"
Click OK

In the Sort dialog, under "Sort by"
you'll see something like "Row1", "Row2" ... etc

Hi

MS Help:Worksheet and Workbook specifications
Worksheet size:65,536 rows by 256 columns

So no way to put your 2000 questions column-wise, unless you divide them to
several sheets.

I do believe Arvi, that was 30 questions in XL 2000.<g>
