Neo: Outlook runs in background

I followed your advice but to no avail. No matter what I do when I close
Outlook 2000 it continues to run under "Processes". It receives mail while
it is shut down. I have tried stopping the following programs without any
change in Outlook's execution: Wcescomm, msmsgs, Net Folders, Word as email
editor and some others. Nothing changes it.

Any other suggestions? This is really frustrating because it causes errors
(email notification) and won't let my computer stay in standby. Never had
this problem until I installed Win XP Home...or at least I never noticed it.

Look for 3rd party programs that are keeping it resident. Examples of
programs that cause this are WinFax, ActiveSync, Microsoft Word (when using
Word as your e-mail editor and Word is running, Antivirus, .etc

The only thing left that I can think of is to reboot the XP box and then
launch each application except Outlook and watch the task manager to see
what is starting Outlook in the background.

Actually, that's not the problem. The problem is Outlook continues to run
after I close it. I've never noticed it launching without my input.

it runs after you close it because something is using it - by watching to
see if any app loads it, you can identify the problem program and close it
before closing outlook.

Forgive my ignorance but would it be a process that's using it or an
application? I have closed all applications before closing Outlook without
any change in behavior. I don't know enough about processes to know which
ones to close. Most are started from the registry or the system without my
input so I don't have a clue what they do.

By the way, this all started because I wanted to backup my pst file and I
got an error message that the file was being used. That's how I discovered
that Outlook was running in the "processes." It never did this before I
installed Win XP Home.

Try creating a new profile and see if the problem still exists. The upgrade
may have corrupted the profile.

Am I correct in assuming that because Outlook 2000 is my default
email
program that it runs in the background in Windows XP Home
Edition?
There
is
always 1, 2 or 3 instances of it running under "processes" in the
task
manager.

Thanks. I'll try it but it was a full installation. I do recall something
about transferring my preferences, though.

I tried creating a new user in Windows XP and the results are still the same
(sigh....) I use Outlook with IMO so there is no profile in Outlook (that I
know of). I have used the inbox repair tool on my pst file.

I am concluding that it's either supposed to work this way for some reason
that I can't see or understand or it is just a bug that I was lucky enough
to discover. :) In either case I have to forget it because it has driven
me sufficiently crazy.

Thanks, everyone, for your efforts. If I ever figure out what I'm doing or
what the problem is, I'll let you know.
