Nested numbered lists not Heading level

How do I get the following to work?

1. item
2. item
3. item
a. nested item
b. nested item
4. item
5. item
c. nested item (should restart at a)
d. nested item (should be b)

I've tried everything obvious I can think of, i.e., right-click and select
restart
numbering, etc. Should I create another identical style, except in name, so
Word can see the obvious?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Susan. I started through Ms. Kelly's procedure, then it dawned on me
that I don't need help with outline numbering at the heading level. So, does
her stuff still apply and how? I guess what I mean to ask is, if I go through
her drill, will I end up with numbered Headings? I don't want that. Thanks
again.

Outline numbering is often used for headings, but it applies to any type of
multi-level numbering (which is what it's called in Word 2007).

Thanks a bundle, Suzanne. It worked without even giving the slightest bit of
attention to heading styles; I just associated the numbering I wanted with
the list number styles. Thanks again for your help.

Yes, I usually use the Heading styles for heading and the List Number series
for numbered lists; sometimes I combine them.
