I have configured Outlook to leave copies of my email on the server
for 3 weeks so I can get my mail from multiple computers. However,
occasionally Outlook will go to the server and download every message
still on the server again, resulting in a duplicate of each message in
my inbox. I know a couple other people that leave copies of their
messages on the server indefinitely. When this problem occurs it
downloads ALL of the thousand messages again, resulting in a horribly
messy inbox.
After discussing this with our network admin, we discovered that the
trigger for this problem was network issue when the mail server was
unable to access the network file system to retrieve our messages.
When this occurs, the mail server tells Outlook that there are 0
messages available. The next time Outlook connects, the mail server
says all the messages are available again, and Outlook must interpret
this to mean that they are all new messages and proceeds to download
all of them. It seems strange to me that Outlook would not check the
Message IDs to determine whether the messages have already been
downloaded. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
