Never-ending 'installing components'

Whenever I open an Office XP on my PC (running WinXP) it
runs a re-installation routine, very tedious.

Excel displays these dialogs:
1. Preparing to install
2. Installing Components, Installing Microsoft Excel feature
& installs something (it's been installing whatever it is
for 6 months now)

Word displays the first dialog but that's all. Office was
installed from the same msi as my work PC which runs Win2K
& does not exhibit this behaviour.

Any clues?
