New at this game and iMac and a ??

Folks,

I am new at the iMac and its newsgroups game.
I am moving over from WIN98SE.
I am using Entourage (of course) for my email.
I would like to know if there is a way to tell Entourage to provide Receive
Receipts when my email recipients open an email.
Ol' Microsoft Outlook Express had this feature, and I an just wondering.
Perhaps I should be using Mac Mail, but it was so easy to get Entourage up
and working.
If I HAVE to go to Mac Mail is there an easy way to slide all Entourage's
Input/Sent/etc. boxes over to Mac Mail?

Also, is there a straightforward way to make Entourage to run
GIF/MID/etc., files received in an email?
Max Mail seems to be able to do this.

Is there a way to increase the allowed length of a NewsGroup line when
composing?

Thanks very much.

I'll be back, for sure.

Go to Tools -> Accounts.
Under the Mail tab, edit the mail account you want to send from.
Click the Options tab.
Under "Additional Headers", add in a new header: Disposition-Notification-To
Under Value, type your e-mail address.

Note: This will only request a return receipt. While some clients can and
will carry out the request, others will prompt the user and they can choose
not to send it back, and still other clients like Entourage ignore the
request completely, so it should not be assumed that no receipt means a
recipient didn¹t receive the message.

Entourage will not animate embedded gifs in simple HTML (or as attachments
to plain text messages). It will, however, animate gifs in complex HTML
messages as the rendering there is done by the IE engine.

You can¹t change the line width with plain text emails; it's fixed at 76
characters (unless the line is quoted). Sending in HTML is the best idea
since it doesn¹t have automatic line breaking.

To set, open Preferences->Mail & News Preferences->Compose. Select under
News either Plain text or HTML.

For quick answers to your questions about Entourage, try searching the
Entourage Help Page <http://www.entourage.mvps.org/>.

Diane,

Thank you for the above advice.
I set my Tiger iMac 10.4.x the best I could, following your instructions.
Howsomever, I must of done sumtin¹ Œrong!!!

Some time ago, I was sent an email, to my WIN98SE system, which contained
text (of course), an embedded animated GIF file, and an embedded Midi file.
On Windows, as soon as I open that email, both the GIF and Midi files start
doing their thing(s).
I have resent/forwarded this email from the Windows system to many people
(even to myself to my iMac with your setup) ---- works on their Windows
systems, won¹t work on my iMac using Tiger 10.4.x set up with your
instructions.
The GIF file won¹t animate at all, but the Midi file will play if activated
manually.

I thought I did set up the ³complex HTML² but must not have done it
correctly.
When you have time, I would appreciate your continued help.
I am able to send you a copy of the original email by Windows.

Thank you,
James Boatwright

Diane,

I did get your instructions to work --- Thank you.

Is there a way to request a Receipt for individual emails as well for ALL
emails?

Thank you,

Set up an alternative account identical to your main one apart from the fact
that the DNR header is enabled (and collecting mail is disabled)

Then, when you want a receipt, just choose this account from the pop-up menu
that appears in the header of a new mail draft window when more than one
account is set up.

Entourage 2004 will only animate animated GIFs if the message is rendered
with the complex HTML engine. Even with the option checked, that rendering
engine is only used for "complex HTML" messages, in other words, messages
including advanced HTML elements like tables. You might still be able to
see the animation by opening the GIF image in QuickTime Player if you see it
in the "Attachments" box.
