I need to design a new standard cover for my Power Point Presentations. I
have specific design elements (landscape orientation, checkerboard
background, rectangular field with photo, title of document) in mind but do
not know how to begin designing the master. Can someone help?

Paul,

Do you just want to create a seperate file to print "covers"?

Landscape.... File menu > page setup > choose landscape slides

to get to the slide master

View menu > masters > slide master

Put everything on the slide master that you want to appear on all your pages.
The content on the slide master will appear "below/under" your real content. If you want a picture to appear on every
cover, put it on the slide master

Position the "place holders" (those click to add title things) where you want them.

View menu > normal.

Now you can edit this page without it affecting your master slide. If you want a picture on this cover but not all the
covers, then put the picture on the slide

A simple checkerboard could be created with "rectangles"

Along the bottom edge of powerpoint is a button marked "autoshapes".....under basic shapes is a rectangle.

Draw one. fill it black. Copy it. fill it white. repeat until you have enough of a checkboard

You could also import an image of a checkboard instead of building one
yourself. Try ...

Save a file to your computer then import it into PowerPoint.

Go to "Insert > Picture > From File"
