New Word doc is always small

I'm using MS Word 2003 SP2. If there's already a word doc open, and I click

Start > All Prog > ...MSWord

or

double-click Word icon on desktop

it brings up a very small window about the size of a business card.

Is this normal? Can I make it full-sized (not minimized)
(BTW, it's not a shortcut problem, the shortcut is set to "run maximized"
....changes to this don't do anything)
