News command in Outlook 2003

S

Stephen Green

After recently installing Windows XP, then Office Pro 2003, I can't seem to
get the "News" menu item up on the top of the Outlook screen.

I've tried to add it using the customize option, but I haven't been able to
do it, yet. If I open Outlook Express, I'm always told that OE isn't the
default Newsreader. I make it so. If I close and re-open Outlook 2003 the
menu item ("News") appears to the right of "Help".

Next day it's square on again.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

Thanks Milly. That SEEMED to work. However when the "News" menu choice
appeared, when clicked it launched Explorer to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\SYSTEM\MSMAPI\1033

I had to open OE directly to send this message.

What's going on?

Thanks for your help.

Open Outlook Express and ensure that when it asks if it should be the
default news reader, uncheck the box "always ask" and check no.
