What is the right thing ? Should I respond to a helpful post, simply to
say "thanks" (like my mom taught me to) or is this considered a waste of
everyone's time and system cycles ?

It is useful to know that a suggestion has solved you problems, this does
enable the frequent posters, like myself and many other MVPs (and other
non-MVPs) here, to hone their responses a little more.

However, I would refrain from adding a simple 'thanks' message to a thread
that you found useful but did not contribute to.

These are my opinions only, and there are no direct 'rules' as such for this
newsgroup. Do what you feel comfortable with :)
