When I rebuild the database, I lose all my newsgroup settings. How do I
avoid this?

You can't. But why are you rebuilding your database? You should only do that
if there's real evidence of corruption. That might happen once a year or so.

Compacting the database after deleting messages (not really helpful or
necessary unless you're really short of space) won't lose newsgroups.
