I'm having the EXACT same problem as the original poster of this
message. I'm using Vista, Outlook 2007, and the Windows Mobile Device
Center. If the problem, as Russ indicated below, is because whoever
wrote the sync software did a bad job, then I guess the problem is

Seriously though, does anyone know why Outlook populated the nickname
field and all of my contacts, and now won't let me delete them?

Are you perhaps referring to the "Email Display As" field? The
nickname
field is most certainly not a required field.
Synchronization problems are not Outlook problems. Whoever wrote your
synch
software appears to have done a bad job. Contact them for support.

Outlook has given nicknames to all my contacts. Now when I sync my
Motorola Q
the nicknames appear in () embeded in the names of each contact.
When I try to delete the nicknames Outlook tells me that it is a required
field.
