no delete icon on bar

I cannot delete messages without opening them and cannot delete several messages at once. The delete icon appears only when I open an email. A junk icon has appeared in its place on the top bar.

Are you sure you're using 2004 and not 2008?

In 2004, the Delete button is not removeable. In 2008, you can add it via
View > Customize Toolbar.

In both versions you can also delete a message without opening it by
highlighting it and pressing the Delete button on your keyboard.
