"No file format information in the registry" in outlook

keep getting this error message whe trying to view picture
attachments (jpg, gifs) from a plain text message, end up
having to save the image to view it which is a pain. Can
view the pictures if I insert them into a HTML e-mail
though!!! any ideas anyone?
