No return receipts?

I can find this ANYWHERE and the help assistant seems to point me in
the right direction but nothing can be found to use read or return
receipts with Exchange server. Is this even an option for us? Why not?

Despite the fact that a vast plurality of high end email programs allow for
receipt requests and receipt acknowledgments, Entourage does not. No one
will tell you why, and don¹t expect an apology.

There is a workaround, however, that actually is not all that bad. It¹s
complicated by comparison to the way it should be (clicking a button), but
it¹s manageable.

I got this advice on this newsgroup, so don¹t get mad at people here. I¹m
stoking your indignation only to let you know you¹re not alone, not to
encourage a slugfest.

Here is what I¹ve done (others I think have refinements):

Set up an account called Request Receipts. Make it a send only account by
not putting anything in the Receiving Mail fields. Do fill in your SMTP
server info.

On the Options tab, make a Special Header with the text
Disposition-Notification-To and of course enter your return email address.
You might want to select a signature if you use them. Otherwise enter
nothing else. Close the account dialog ignoring the warning that you will
not be able to receive mail. That¹s the idea.

Then set up a Mailbox called Receipt Requests.

Then make a Rule called Receipts:
If any criteria are met: Specific Header Disposition-Notification-To Exists

Then:
Copy message: Receipt Requests
Display dialog: Display message: Receipt Requested
[this will give you little dialog alert whenever a receipt request comes in]

Enable the rule.

When you want to request a receipt, send your email from the Receipts
account.

When someone asks you for one, you will know because you will get the
dialog, and a copy of that email will be in your Receipts mailbox. I delete
that copy after I¹ve acknowledged the receipt. You could also set up a
special message to use for answering receipts. I haven¹t bothered because I
don¹t get many requests, and I certainly don¹t want to set up an automatic
receipt acknowledgment since doing it only when I¹ve actually read the
message is the whole point.

Hope this helps. As I say, you may find that someone else has a refinement
(or that someone else has answered this more completely while I was messing
with this long email).

Best,

- Bill

You can insert the 'return receipt' header into the account settings:

Open the account for editing (ToolsAccounts; then select the account &
click on Edit)

Under the 'Options' tab, second item down is 'Additional Headers'. In the
'Header' column enter "Disposition-Notification-To" (without the quotes);
and in the 'value' column enter your email address.

DNRs will now be sent out with every message from this account, but not all
mail clients & mail servers support these protocols, so results from the
world at large may be variable.

If you have only an occasional need to do this on a message by message
basis,
duplicate your account and add the header to the new account only. Make sure
that this account is NOT included in any mail checking schedules, but that
mail from this account IS sent with every send. Now, to include the
return-receipt, simply change the account of a message to this ŒRR¹ account
with the pop-up menu that appears next to the 'from' header in a draft
message window when you have more than one account defined.
