Normal dot problem

The problem started with Word opening realllllly slow. (Win 98, Ofc
2000, 80G Hard Drive, 466mhz - if needed to respond.) I have monitored
the newsgroup and tried some of the potential solutions, ie, started
word from icon using CTRL key, checked for corrupted registry file,
only one Normal.dot, etc.

Nothing really worked. BUT, I find this interesting. If I delete
Normal.dot, Word opens really fast. . . . But, when I exit Word (not
having typed a character or changing anything, it will ask if I want
to save changes to Doc 1 (I say 'no'); then it says 'changes have been
made which affect Global template, do I want to save those?' If I
say no and just exit; when I open Word again, it opens really fast.
(Then, of course, if I search for Normal.dot, it doesn't exist). If I
had said yes to saving changes (even tho I made no changes) then when
I open Word again, it opens sloooowwww again!

This is driving me nuts! Any suggestions?

My guess is that you have Norton Antivirus and have the Office Plug-In
installed. If so, you should disable it.

Thanks Charles but not the case here. I use Zone Alarm as both a
firewall and antivirus program. It's been installed for a long time,
and the Word problem developed just a while ago.
