Norton Internet Security 2005 and Outlook 2003

Does anybody else have problems with integrating the 'Anti-spam' feature of
this with Outlook?

Typically (and intermittently) while receiving messages, the process will
slow and appear to hang. If you try to cancel the receive process, Outlook
itself may crash, and if you do succeed in shutting down Outlook safely, two
Symantec email scanning icons remain in the Windows notification area. Only
a reboot enables Outlook to connect successfully again.

This problem only seems to occur when 'Anti-spam' is turned on, I have never
had problems with the Antivirus side of the package.

While I could turn this off and rely on my ISP's spam filtering plus
Outlook's spam filter, it is galling to pay for something you can't use.

Incidentally, McAfee isn't an option, its spam filter randomly 'loses'
Outlook messages which you decide are not spam!

G'Day Gunslinger,

Join the club of disaffected anti-spam users.

A large number of users seem to uninstall this part
of their security package, as well as disabling the virus
scanning of outgoing e-mail.

McAfee lost e-mail during the 'rescue' process IF you
tried to rescue multiple e-mails - I think it has now been
fixed.

Using Outlook 2003, I am finding the Junk-Mail feature,
while still not brilliant, has a better accuracy than Norton
or McAfee.

Good Luck!

I don't think any of the Outlook MVP's is using Symantec products (that
integrate with Outlook). Enough said :)

Thanks.

I'd come to the conclusion that I could live without NAS anyway,
particularly as my ISP's filter seems to trap 95% of current spam.

Trouble is, if big companies like Symantec and McAfee cannot get 'visible'
problems like this sorted, it casts doubts in the minds of users like me on
how effective their core products really are.

If you had perused this group at all before posting, you'd know the answer
is "yes". Integrating Norton's scanners with Outlook usually causes more
problems than it cures and it's NEVER necessary.

Thank you for your constructive and helpful response my friend, sums up all
that is best about Usenet.

A moment's perusal of the group indicates some 2000 headers represents only
about a week's postings, it's hardly likely that a specific problem not
affecting half the planet is going to appear unless you you ask. Unlike the
worthy and very helpful MVP's most people only access groups such as this
when they have a problem.

A Google search on 'norton' and 'antispam' did not bring up the specific
problem, and a number of the posts are fairly old and/or reflect earlier
versions of the respective products and/or cover problems that have been
resolved by Symantec (like the Toolbar issue).
