i just bought a new computer. I installed office:mac before I realized
that i was supposed to delete the trial version that came with the
computer. I dont know if this is a result of that but, now when i try
to click on a link in a email, it does nothing. I even tried to get
here by opening entourage and going to the product website via the menu
tab under help. Nothing happens. I can send and receive mail, no
problem there. I was just wondering if i screwed up entourage by not
deleting the test version first. If that is the problem, what can i do
about it?

Ok, I uninstalled everything microsoft on my computer by using the
office:mac cd. I reinstalled and i still cant get to this web site from
entourage by going to help > visit product website. ALso, i cant click
on links in email sent to me, nothing happens. WHY? WHY? WHY? I hate
problems! Can anyone help me?

Isn't anyone else having problems clicking on hyperlinks in emails? It
is very frustrating not having them work. Is there a setting or
something I need to tweek? Help me~

Which email program are you using? It's kind of hard to advise you when we
don't know which program to advise you about.

Sorry, I just assumed that everyone would know since I said I installed
Office:mac. It is the student and teacher edition 2004. I am using
Entourage.

I'm guessing that the links don't have the 'http://' and are just written as
www.google.com not http://www.google.com/.

This is a bit of a annoyance with Entourage (not hyperlinking without the
http:, which most people don't put in automatically.) The only way to do it
(that I know of), is to cut and paste the URL into your browser and it
should work fine (the browser is smart enough to automatically add the
http://)

There's one more trick: if the link is not clickable, as in www.google.com,
simply hold down the Cmd-key (Apple key) and click on that bit of text. By
doing so, you'll tell Entourage that the text is actually a URL, and it will
open the link in your browser. Try that; it should work.

No links of any sort work. Say for instance a Compusa ad. Clicking on a
link in their ad should take you to their web site. It does nothing. As
i said earlier, even trying to acess this web site by going to the menu
bar and clicking on visit product web site does nothing. It appears
that something is not right. I also cant click on hyperlinks to track
packages. Nothing happens. On my other computer i never had a problem
with entourage. Hyperlinks of any kind do not work in any mail. Does
anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to fix
it?

When I hold down the Cmd-key and click on the text nothing happens. I
just checked my email. Itunes music store sent me a link to a free
song. I click on it, nothing. My web browser doesn't open nothing > sip

When you hover over a link, does the cursor turn into a hand?

Have you quit and restarted Entourage since this problem appeared?

L

Hi Daiya,
To answer your question "yes" when I hover over a link the cursor turns
into a hand. now for the weird part. Say I got a email about tracking
packages. When i move the cursor over the hyperlink it turns into a
hand but does nothing when i click on it. But, at the top of the letter
were it say's to: and From: it has the email address hyperlinked. I can
click on those and it opens a new email so that i could send a mail to
those people. I just dont understand why the regular hyperlinks dont
work. I use them alot and this it very time consuming. Any ideas?

I've seen this behaviour in MT-Newswatcher as well. I can only conclude
it is for one of two reasons:

1) because for all the program knows, it might be a FTP or other
non-web link. Even a HTTPS link might fail with an assumption of HTTP.

Yes I know that in the above examples, there is a "www" prefix but what
if there weren't? The programmer might have concluded that it is best
to make no assumptions.

AND/OR

2) because the programmer was lazy or not thinking that day. :)

In short, all links should be fully specified in any kind of posting.

Just my 2 cents.

Tim,
Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, the links do have http:
I am at a total loss. I am thinking it might be a problem with the
computer software. I have noticed that keychain does not work as well,
and the hyperlink in the help menu of keychain does not work. i dont
know if i should reinstall the system software or what?

Well, if it turns into a hand Entourage thinks it is a hyperlink. (every so
often I stop seeing the hand but quit/restart fixes it)

Is it possible that you are running in some sort of limited account that
shuts down access to any browser? Do hyperlinks in Word or other apps
connect you to the web? Can you try it in a different user account in the
OS?

L

luvmymac

Well, I finally had enough! I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the
os and office. Now everything is working fine. Thank you all for
helping out. It is really appreciated ;-)
