Numbered Lists - only every other one is auto

I am running Word 2003. I have it set to automatically
number my lists. Unfortunately, it only does this for two
entries then reverts the indentation so I end up with
something like this:

1. List item one.
2. List item two.
3. List item three.
4. List item four.

I can backspace, delete the automatically placed #3, type
it in again, and it will correct itself for that entry and
the next (#4), but then revert again. In other words, the
auto numbering with correct indentation only lasts for 2
entries no matter what I do.

Thank you to anybody that can help!
(Still a die-hard WordPerfect fan, and getting more and
more convinced to stay that way)

Don't use this method to create numbered lists. In fact, if you want to
retain your sanity, don't let Word do much of anything for you automatically
(see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TameAutoFormat.htm. Instead, apply
the List Number style (or, if you want the indent, List Number 2), which you
