Numbered Outline Without the Numbered Outline

Does anyone know how to create a numbered outline WITHOUT using the outline
feature, ie just using paragraphs and bullets/numbers such that you can
add/delete entries and the numbers will all update automatically and still
create a table of contents. I'm doing this because I cannot figure out how
to use a numbered outline and seperate a heading from the rest of the text
in the paragraph (see "Still hoping for a solution post earlier today...")
for use in a table of contents.

You don't need Outline View to create an outline (if that is what you
are asking). But you do need to set numbering up according to the
instructions at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/outlinenumbering.html. Once
this is properly done, you can try the solution macropod suggested in
the other thread.
