Numbering not advancing

Linda again

I said it was working and it was, however, temporarily.
Now it won't keep the numbering going and I didn't type in
format box. I had a previous call open and thought I
should start a new one as the other was so far back.

I have redone and redone and redone shaunakelly and like I
said it looks great, and works until I start a new set of
numbers. If we can't get this solved, does anyone have
any ideas on how much it calls to call Microsoft? Thanks
so much for trying everything. I

When you set up your levels in the Customize dialog, you're *typing
in* the numbering instead of using the numbering codes. That won't
work.
Level 1
Number format: 1.0

Level 2
Number format: 1.1 here)<<<<<

You have to pick the 1,2,3 style from the 'Number style' box then type
in a period. For the first level, you have to follow the period with
a typed zero.

Unless you see the number in grey, meanng it's a code, you don't have
automatic numbering. It follows that the reason Previous level number
is (nothing in here) for levels 2 and up is because there are no
numbering codes to employ, just typed numbers.

Hi Linda:

You are using "Heading" type outline list numbering.

The Heading styles can be linked to only ONE list template. There can be
only ONE such "list" in the document. Anything with a Heading-series style
is a member of the same list.

Restart numbering is not available for a Heading list. You need to use a
series of single-level ("Numbered") list templates if you want to restart
the numbering.

Have I confused you totally now? :)

Yes you have. I redid the numbering again and I am
getting the greyed out number in the number format and the
first two levels are working. When I come to Level Three
I am getting the number to advance but incorrectly.

1.0 Introduction
1.1 Game Plan
1.1.1 Linda
2.1.1 Sue
3.1.1 Cathy

So it is advancing but the first number is advancing, not
1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3

Hi Linda:

OK, I think I would delete that number format and start again.

In the Format>Styles>Modify>Numbering>Customise... Dialog you will find that
the level three style list template has three "counters" showing as grey "1"
characters.

Their sequence in the dialog is significant. If you are getting the wrong
number incrementing, then this means that the counter that should be third
from the left is actually the first on the line.

Throw it out and start again with a clean Outline format list template.

Click in the first Heading 1 styled paragraph in the document and attach one
of the samples that shows the word "Heading" in its sample.

Click RESET on all the samples to find it if it is not immediately
displayed: if you have been doing a lot of fiddling in that document, the
default list templates will no longer be visible.

The list templates with "Heading" in their samples are predefined with all
the things correctly set to become members of a nine-level Heading outline
where each lower level increments after a higher level. The other default
list templates are predefined for other purposes and you have to do a great
deal more work to customise them for heading use.

Hope this helps
