Numbering

When I using the numbering option it starts from a random number inspite of defining in the Customize Numbered List "Start At" option.

Similarly if I attemp to number a list in between then even the previous list number is changes. Why? I face the same problems while creating Outline numbers as well.

I am using Word 2000 and Word XP and in both am encountering this problem.

It sounds as if you may be dealing with outline numbering. This must be set
up *exactly* as detailed in
