When I try to send an email with a numbers doc attached the email cannot send - entourage tries to compress but then never saves or sends the email. I have to force quit to get out

Hi,

be sure to include the version of Entourage and Mac OS X you are using; that
makes answering your questions easier. Speaking of which, you don't ask any;
I assume you want to know how one can attach Numbers documents to an
Entourage message. A Numbers/Pages/Keynote file is not, technically
speaking, a file, it is a folder, and e-mail clients can't deal with
folders, so some sort of compression needs to take place. My guess is that
you are using Entourage 2004, whose compression engine got broken at some
point (note also that Stuffit Expander, which is required for that process,
is no longer installed by default in Mac OS X 10.4 or later). The best
solution would be to compress the file in the Finder; you can do this by
right-/ctrl-clicking the file and choosing "Create Archive
(10.3+10.4)/Compress (10.5)". You will get a ZIP file which you can easily
attach to an Entourage message, and the app should not hang any longer.

What the Stuffit told me was Entourage-04 is looking for Stuffit 11. Entourage-04 does-will not see Stuffit 12. Microsoft would have to issue an update in order for Entourage-04 to use Stuffit 12.

Either use the steps by Michel Bintener or use Apple's Mail that comes with OS 10.4/5.

You can archive your files in the Finder. Another alternative is to use
Barry Wainwright's script "Attach Zip". I was going to provide the link, but
see Barry is transition his web site. Will get back with a link on that if
you are interested.
