Whenever we type in Word the work area turns black. If we double click it
turns white again until we type another character. Did someone select an
option that I cannot find? How do I correct this? Thank you.

Computer Teacher, Office 98 is a Mac product. Are you working on a Mac, or
are you using a different version of Office on a PC?

The users can check the version of Office by opening one of the applications
and going to Help/About. The version will be listed there.

As far as the work area turning black, I'd guess it is a display issue.
Since it's a PC, I'd try turning back hardware acceleration as described at
How to set graphics hardware acceleration back
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm. I might try updating video
drivers as well.
