Office 2000 needs CD when opening an xls file?

Friend of mine has Office 2000 installed on Windows XP SP2. When he gets
sent an email with an xls attachment and tries to open it, he gets the
"Office needs the CD" dialog box. If he clicks on "Cancel" then he can open
the xls file! Am I right in assuming that the files he is being sent have
been written in either 2002 or 2003 and Excel 2000 is looking for some sort
of translator? It's quite irritating!

WHen Excel was installed on the PC, not all features where installed (you
have that option to install on first use).
There must be something in the Excel that needs a feature that was never
installed. If your friend has the CD, they can use Add/Remove on Office
2000, chose Modify and install the features for Excel.

Since they have not done this, I assume they do not have the CD anymore. If
anyone else has the CD, they can borrow it and either copy the CD or click
on Excel and tell the INstaller to Run everything from my Computer. It will
then install the complete package.

They have the CD somewhere. I'm just surprised that if "cancel" is pressed
at this stage, the workbook opens perfectly normally!
