Howdy,

I would like to know if there is a way that I can install Office 2003 from a
network share that will also create a LIS.

Thanks!

Hi Heath,

In Office 2003 it's a choice between using an Office Admin point or a Local Installation source as the installation point. In
Office 2007 the Office Admin Point is gone, and the Office Network Installation Point (oNIP) is basically a CD image and the Local
Installation source is now a mandatory item. The actual installation is done from the LIS on the client PCs.
You'll find more details on the scenarios for maintaining Office 2003 installation in the 2003 Office Resource Kit (ORK2003) at
http://microsoft.com/office/ork

Hi Heath,

Sorry for the delayed response due to the weekend.

First of all, thanks for Bob's answer on this issue.

Heath, as far as I know, in Office 2003, if you install Office 2003 from an
Administrative Installation Point (AIP), then the Local Installation Source
(LIS) is not created. So the problem is, what do you mean "a network
share". If this is an AIP, then I think there is no way to create the LIS
in this manner. If the "network share" is just a shared folder that
contains a copy of Office 2003 install CD, then the LIS is always created
when installing Office 2003.

I am sorry for any inconvenience this feature may cause. If you have any
additional questions regarding this issue, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks Leon. Yes installing from a network share using the cdrom image
created the LIS which is what I wanted. I don't suppose there is a way to
integrate SP2 into the cdrom image on a network share is there? (and yes i
know it can be done with a AIP, but I don't want to use this as I still want
a LIS)

Thanks

Hi Heath,

Thanks for your update on this issue.

You can use the Ohotfix.exe file and a modified Setup.ini file to chain
together the installations of Office 2003 and Office 2003 SP2 or any other
update that you want. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Create a network share that contains a copy of the Office 2003 CD. For
example, create the following network share: \\ server \off2003

2. Download the OHotFix (Offinst.exe) utility. Then, extract the
Ohotfix.exe file, the Ohotfixr.dll file, and the Ohotfix.ini file to a
subfolder in the network share. For example, extract the files to the
following subfolder in the network share: \\ server \off2003\ohotfix

To obtain the OHotFix utility, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/orkarchive/XPddl.htm

3. Copy the .msp files that will be applied during the Office 2003
installation to the network share that contains the OHotFix files.

Note OHotFix applies all updates in the network share by using Microsoft
Windows sort order. If you want the updates to be installed in a specific
order, rename the updates accordingly. For example, rename the updates as
1_update.msp, 2_update.msp, 3_update.msp, and so on.

4. Make a backup of the Setup.ini file that is located in the Setup
subfolder of the Office 2003 flat folder. The Setup.ini file is located in
the following folder: \\ server \off2003\Files\Setup\ . Rename the
Setup.ini file as Setup.ini.old.

5. Open the Setup.ini file in a text editor such as Notepad.

6. Copy the following text to the end of Setup.ini file:
[ChainedInstall_1]
TaskName=Ohotfix Chained Updates
TaskType=exe
Path=\\server\off2003\ohotfix\ohotfix.exe
IgnoreReturnValue=0

7. Save the Setup.ini file.

8. Install Office 2003 by running the Setup.exe file that is located in
the following folder: \\ server \off2003

Note Chained installations occur only if you run the Setup.exe file. If you
run the Msiexec.exe file to install Office 2003, the Setup.ini file is not
read.
