Office 2003 upgrade - Macros Lost!!

I've set up Office 2003 upgrade using a silent install
over my work network. Having tested it using SMS to push
it out I've discovered that the upgrade overwrites the
normal.dot template which results (in many cases) the loss
of macros. Does anyone know how to upgrade office from XP
to 2003 without losing the macros?
