Office 2007 Activation Trouble

T

Tibelian

I would appreciate help here.

I have a trial version of Office Professional 2007 installed on my (work)
laptop since mid-February. I have been very satisfied with the product and
wanted to get a full license.

I obtained the 25-digit Office Professional 2007 activation key through my
employer (who has several bulk license keys) and tried to "Convert" my Trial
to a full version. However Office repeatedly says that my License Keys are
not valid.
Funny part is that the same keys work on other systems at work where they
have been installed (it's a group license), the only difference being that
all those systems had a clean install of Office 2007 from the DVD.

1. Do I also need to re-install Office 2007 for this key to be accepted?
2. Is it due to the fact that I installed the Trial version before we
purchased the keys (and presumably before they were generated) that this is
not working?
3. Any ideas on how to get this working? I don't want to go through the
ordeal of a re-install again.

Thanks

IIRC you can only convert retail trials to retail versions and not to volume
license ones, you may need to reinstall Office.
Retail versions don't take volume keys.

Your computer knows the difference between the keys and the software even if
for all intents and purposes they are the same from our point of view. Get
the disks from your employer, back up your files (just in case), uninstall
your copy of Office, install from the CDs.

Thanks for the reply.

But this one seems to be a bummer from my perspective. Microsoft claims that
I could "convert" my trial into a full functional version by just inserting
valid Product Keys without having to re-install the humungous files and deal
with back-ups etc. There is even the "convert" button in any of the
Office-options menu which asks the user to input any valid product key. But,
obviously something isn't working the way it should!!

But it has to be of the same version of Office. Apparently the Trial version and the one that the key belongs to is not the same. Check both version numbers.

Anyone who goes messing about with software (major issues like this) and
doesn't back up their files first, is walking on thin ice. I am a big - no,
strike that - HUGE believer in Murphy's Law.

Oh no! You got me wrong. I regularly backup - every night when I am
sleeping. just that it takes away 2 - 3 hrs of productive time if I do it
during the day!

I have the trial version of Office 2007 Professional and the product keys
are for a full version of Office 2007 Professional (or that's what the email
confirmation says!).

I shall call MS support come Monday and ask them what's going on!

Thanks for your time and patient attempts.

Hi Tibelian,

From your description your company may be using a volume license key and enterprise media Office 2007 products, while your trial
copy is a retail product. Enterprise/volume license keys generally don't work when applied to a retail 2007 product. If that is
the case you'd want to uninstall the trial copy, restart the PC then install and key the items your employer provided.

Generally, for home use on those licenses a MS Office 'Home use' license product and key would be provided and that key would
generally work with the retail trial.
