Office 2007 Pro - Purchased Product Key, Can't Convert Trial

P

philthy903

Hi All,

I've been trialling Office 2007 Pro for the last week, and the decision to
buy is a no-brainer - this product is superb. Installation of the trial
(replacing Office XP) went flawlessly.
I bought the product key online (again a no-brainer and so easy), but that's
where the fun ended.
I haven't been able to get anything other than the "product key is
incorrect" message.
I've pasted the key directly from the confirmation email, and I've also
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the trial files. I've even downloaded
them again, but no joy.
Really hoping someone can help with this - my trial time is limited and I
don't think I could bear a "downgrade" back to Office XP!

TIA
Phil.

(Personal comment - I will never buy a license online. I've heard of too
many problems doing so.)

Contact Microsoft, assuming that's who you bought it from, and tell them.
They can help you.

Oddly enough, of the literally dozens of licenses I've bought online,
Microsoft's is the first to give me any problems and the last I'd expect them
from. The product key was purchased direct from Microsoft's own Digital River
store, so it's not like I'm dealing with a reseller that's trying to unload
suspect keys on me.

All I can think of is that the key they sold me is supposed to work with an
installation done from CD/DVD or something like that. The install I did was
using the downloadable trial, and the online store makes no distinction.

Just had an email from "Microsoft Office AU", giving me a number to call.
Turns out the number is in the US, and they can't help an Australian user
with a potential replacement product key. I've been given an Australian
number to call, but as it's 11.30pm I guess I'll have to wait yet another day
before I find out if it's got a real person at the end of the line. Meanwhile
the trial expiry gets closer....

Perhaps the next step is to find a torrent of a CD/DVD ISO and try the
product key that way, but I don't want to go down that path (who knows what
else is in the download) and I shouldn't have to. I've spent over two days on
this so far and it's wearing me down a little. A great shame, because the
product itself is terrific.

The key that you purchased was it for the same Edition of Office 2007 that is installed as the Trial on your computer.

As an example ===Office 2007 Pro key will not work on a Office 2007 Enterprise Edition. The key must be for the same Edition that you are presently using and is installed as the Trial.

Hi Peter,

Yes, the trial is for Office 2007 Professional, and so is the key.
All applications have "Part of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Trial" in
their "About" dialogue, and Product ID 81605-303-7841026-65818.

The product key was purchased from this link:
http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyau/searchresults.aspx?keyword=office 2007 professional upgrade
Three of the five products are Office 2007 Pro - I chose the first (i.e. the
third one on the page). The only difference appears to be their SKU. Perhaps
it's something to do with that?

Problem solved -

Well, I took a chance today and threw a few extra dollars at a CD of the OEM
Preinstallation Kit (OPK).
(With 5 PC's in the house I'd need it eventually if I ever got the first
install going - besides, it was probably cheaper than last night's call to
the States).
Not only did it work with the product key I'd bought online, it also handled
the OEM Medialess Licence Kit I bought earlier by mistake - so Office 2007 is
now on the notebook too :)

The lesson out of all this?
If you live in Australia and like the trial version, ditch it and spend $30
on the OPK before you go any further. It's much better on the blood pressure.
A lot of this hassle would be avoided if the Activation Wizard was more
helpful (something like "The Product Key you provided is for Version X, but
you are trying to activate Version Y").

Thanks to all who contributed. Hope I can save someone else the grief I went
through.

Cheers
Phil.
