Office 2008 and Entourage Palm Sync

N

Nelson Ramos

With Office 2008 being released next week, I have not seen any documentation
as to whether Entourage will have a Palm conduit from Day 1. Will there be a
conduit available or is this something that we will have to wait for. This
would probably play a major factor in whether I upgrade now or wait till
later.

Hi Nelson!

Later versions of Entourage 2004 have favored using Mac OS X's built-in
Sync Services rather than a conduit for syncing with Palm. Have a look
in the iSync application.

Hope this helps!

The only fly in the ointment to relying on Sync Services is that if you do
that it is not currently possible to have recurrent Tasks in Entourage
because iCal doesn't support them. Syncing such recurrent Tasks immediately
destroys the recurrent aspect of the task or, worse, sets up some weird
recurrence without your input. Bottom line: relying on Sync Services ruins
some of the functionality of Entourage and is a show-stopper as far as
upgrading to Entourage 2008, at least for me.
Best regards,
Rick

First, I don't know if I would go so far as to say Entourage *favors*
Sync Services. Personally, I prefer *not* to synchronize my Entourage
addresses, events, and tasks with .Mac, because I don't have or want
.Mac.

I say Entourage "favors" because Sync Services because all recent
syncing development or improvement has been in the area of working with
Apple's Sync Services. The Palm sync conduit for Entourage has not
improved much over the past few years, most likely because the Palm OS
hasn't been updated for non-phone devices in a few years and shows no
signs of being updated.
Second, I don't know that Sync Services has much at all to do with Palm
devices anyway.

Palm syncing is supported by Apple's Sync Services. Open iSync and check
under the Devices menu.

To answer your question:

If you want to synchronize Palm device with Entourage, you run
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/Handheld Sync
Installer to install the Microsoft Handheld Sync conduit. That conduit
replaces the standard Palm Desktop conduits with a Entourage conduit.
You still use Palm Desktop to configure the new Entourage conduit, but
when you HotSync, the new Entourage conduit synchronizes your Palm
device with your Entourage address book, calendar, and so on.

It is unknown if this mechanism is available in Microsoft Office 2008.
But I can tell you I, for one, will be *very* disappointed if it's
missing when i get my copy of 2008!

As an Entourage 2004/Palm syncing user (Treo 755p), I too am hoping to
find
some answers on all of this.

My upgrade copy of Office 2008 has been ordered, but won't get here
for a few
weeks. Would be nice to have a lot of this worked out before I get it
so a smooth
transition from 2004 to 2008 can happen.

Any details anyone else has on this or a link to a detailed report by
someone at
Macworld this week for a detailed report on Office 2008 would be
appreciated.

Hi Marty!

I can confirm that Microsoft is no longer shipping an Entourage conduit
for Palm.

You can either use Mac OS X's Sync Services using the iSync application
or you can use a third party product such as The Missing Sync from
MarkSpace <http://www.markspace.com/missingsync_palmos.php>.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the confirmation. Guess I need to go down the road of
getting The Missing Sync. I've held off buying it until now, but it
looks like it will be the best solution since I've tried to work with
iSync and it doesn't sync with near enough fields that I need.

Appreciate the quick response.

does not work with Entourage yet !

Guess that means I stick with Entourage 2004 on my main Mac and use
one of the other ones in the house to test Entourage 2008 and iSync.
