Office 2008 Home & Student with Entourage from Exchange EmailProvider

Struggling to find a way to use my copy of Office Home & Student with
the "full" copy of Entourage provided to me by my mail provider.

I am a recent Mac convert and since my mail provider uses Exchange,
and I use a BlackBerry to sync with the server, I need to use a "full"
version of Entourage.

I purchased Office Home & Student, ran a custom install leaving
Entourage out of the install, and it hosed my Entourage.

I have had to completely remove Office and re-install Entourage as a
standalone office app.

Trying to find a solution, and hoping someone here can help so I can
get Word, Excel, PPT installed on my machine without it breaking
Entourage.

Thanks,

One other user asked the same question. I'm sorry we didn't have any help to
offer and he never posted back with what worked. AFAIK, you can not run the
full version along with the Home & Student version. It's an either or
situation.

I would press then for an answer. Please let us know what you find out.

Diane,

Thanks for the response.

Any suggestions on "who" to press for an answer?

Your ISP. They provided you with the standalone version. They should be able
to contact their MSFT rep and get an answer.

To me it would make more sense to offer users a discount copy of Office. Not
many people just want Entourage.

Diane,

Thanks for the reply. After reading a few different tips here and
there I found a solution that has worked!!

I removed my current Entourage installation from the system and then
rebooted.

I installed the full Office 2008 Suite via DVD (including Entourage;
no custom install, just let it run). No reboot.

Once the Office 2008 install completed, I then installed the .dmg of
Entourage from my mail provider. Installed without a hitch. Still no
reboot.

I then installed Office 2008 SP1, which I had already downloaded from
Mactopia. I then rebooted.

Once back up, I installed 12.1.1 and 12.1.2 in succession, both of
which I had downloaded the .dmg files as well. I then rebooted.

After the system was back up, I started Entourage without issue. Found
my mail, and I am able to send from my Exchange based email addy. I
then started up the rest of the Office Suite without issue.

Looks like all is well after a little research and many hours spent
trying to figure this one out.

Hopefully this post helps others out there that might be running into
the same challenges.

Thanks,

Just to be clear...this is the Home & Student version??

I appreciate your feedback and will get this posted. Thanks!

Very interesting! I would imagine that the PID (Product ID) from the
Entourage/Exchange client completely replaced your PID from your Home &
Student install, effectively giving you a fourth full install. If you
check the About... under each application menu do you see the same
Product ID number for everything?

I'd love to know if others can reproduce this as well or if you just had
wild luck!

Diane,

Yes, my apologies for that. This is the Home & Student version of
Office 2008.

Bill,

Interestingly enough, the PID's are different for Entourage vs. Word,
Excel, PPT.

Bill,

Additionally, this was installed on a 1.6Ghz MacBook Air running OS
10.5.4.

Curiouser and curiouser. I wouldn't think that's possible since the PIDs
are in two places that are both accessed by all of Office.

You've stumbled on a good find if someone else can reproduce your results.

THANKS JOEY! THIS WORKED! You're a life saver.

I never reply to posts, but I have to for this one.

I spent the last 3 days trying to resolve the Entourage 2008 conflict with Office Home Office Edition (and on a MacBook Air as well). I had uninstalled/reinstalled/stripped out all MS software at least a dozen times.

I was skeptical about your fix until Entourage 2008 opened at the same time as Word and now live/work happily together.

I followed the exact order of when to install and reboot in your instructions above - worked like a charm. The whole process took me about 1hr. 15min. I think the key to this may lie with the SP updates - they need to be downloaded as opposed to updated automatically...just a theory.

THANKS A MILLION!!!!!

Bill,

Looks like Cecilia followed the steps and it worked for her as well!!
