Office 2008 installs with owner 502

The Office 2008 package installer sets the owner for most of the files, and
many system directories, to id 502. Typically, the first (Admin) user on
your mac is 501, and the second (typically test or unprivileged user) is
502.

This is, of course, very broken. See the blog post above.
