I would doubt it. You got a specific download link?

There are free VIEWERs for MS Office components, such as Word and PowerPoint
and Excel - labeling for them says "97/2000" - maybe that's what you (or
your informant) saw?

Someone tells me that when microsoft stops suporting a program it's became a
freeware, and microsoft does not offer any service any more to office 97...

No, Microsoft does not release its software as freeware once support ends.
You still must purchase it.

This has never happened so far, and probably never will. DOS 2.1 still
isn't freeware and evidently never will be. Why would Microsoft make a
product available for free when there's a chance you can be persuaded to
buy a later version?
