Office 97 upgrade install problem

I just bought a new computer and can't complete the install of my Office 97 upgrade product because it seaches for a previously installed version of office which I no longer have. How can I complete the install? I can't afford to buy a new full version.

Unfortunately, you cannot use Office 97 upgrade as the license for it
requires the previous qualifying product. If you no longer have the
qualifying product, your license is invalid.
