Office Discovery Protocol

Hi

I'm running a webpage under apache (with no frontpage extensions) and I've
got an Excel .xml file in a protected directory (Basic Auth).
Since Office 2003 it tries to obtain R/W Access to that file first which
results in a lot of popups for the login authentication, which is just not
bareable for normal users, as NOONE of them should be allowed R/W access
anyway!

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;838028 states:

You may be prompted for authentication when you open Office files. This
behavior occurs if the Web server requires authentication to process an
OPTIONS call to the URI of the folder. Changes to the server configuration
can typically be made to avoid this problem by giving anonymous users browse
permissions to the folder. Browse permissions are also know as list
permissions. The prompt for authentication is expected if the server requires
authentication.

Yeah great, why would I want allow list privileges to a PROTECTED directory
just that office sees that it has NO Write perms??
Is there any workaround without weakening restrictions and avoiding those
annoying password popups??

Thanks a lot!
