Office should not delete the last auto-saved file when closing

Working with a Visio document embeded in a Word document, I accidentally
ended up closing the Word document when I thought I was only closing the
Visio object without changes. As a result I lost several hours of work,
something that I thought was part of the dark ages considering auto-save and
all the warnings and prompts. As this type of accidents can (and they will)
still occur, it would be great if Office could keep the last auto-saved copy
of the file available for a couple of days after the document is closed
without saving, so that the copy can be used as a "crisis" back-up.

Unfortunately there is no successful method of preventing a determined
user from deleting their work. Every time an additional layer of
"protection" is provided, more computer resources are consumed and
people complain about the slowed response and the expanding storage
requirements and then the user STILL manages to delete their work AND
then wants YET another layer of "protection".

Did you give the file a name?.. when starting on a document, do not wait
until you have finished before giving it a name.. do it at the start, and
autosave will work for you..

Hi C.,

MS Word does not have an autosave feature built in.
You can use the 'always create a backup' setting in
Tools=>Options=>Save and you can add a timed autosave
(rather than autorecover) as shown here.

The support template for Office 2003 (support11.dot)
that includes this feature is an optional installation
item from Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel
for Office/Word 2003.
