Office XP install path

P

Phil Gilbert

We have a vertical industry application that integrates
Word as it's word processor. It is dependent on a
standard word install location for it to work. Since you
can have several \program files\micros~1..2,3 etc. paths
depending on how much MS software you have, we settled on
a custom install of c:\msoffice as the default install
for all workstations. Office would always install to
c:\msoffice\office on all workstations.

We had been using Word 97 and recently purchased the
newest version of ACT which requires Word 2000 or above.
We then bought 10 licenses of OfficeXP for the 10
producers/workstations that use it. Bam!, using the
custom install on OfficeXP and telling it the install
path is C:\msoffice it installs it to
C:\msoffice\office10 rather than C:\msoffice\office which
is needed for the other 35 workstations that do not use
ACT/OfficeXP.

Is there any way to change this install path? We are
using Win98 OS due to legacy apps.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi Phil,

Unfortunately there is no way to change the install path from the
'OFFICE10' directory. This is hardcoded into the Windows Installer database
(*.MSI). Office 2003 use OFFICE11. The plan is to continue this naming
convention to prevent conflicts with previous versions.

This was done to simplify the installation of multiple versions of Office
that may need to be retained for backwards compatability, just like you are
curently seeing.

I would suggest in this situation that you keep your Office/Word 97
installation for your older custom/verticle application. ACT will not have
a problem with finding Word 2002 in the OFFICE10 directory for its use.

The real problem of course is how Winword is being called. Newer
applications let Windows take care of where applications are registered so
they only need to call winword.exe and appropriate registry entries will
direct call to the app (wherever it is installed).

I hope this helps.
