Tanya

hello,
1. i apologize if this is the wrong newsgroup.
2. i need to use a spreadsheet program (i need to create spreadsheets
not only view them) -- i do not have msword (office) nor msWorks...
however i have a cd (1 cd only) with office97. (it supposedly includes a
spreadsheet program)

is there a problem installing it onto a windows 98se and an ANTIQUE
win95b machine?
(i imagine there are updates for it -- if so where?)

thank you in advance and sorry if this is the incorrect group for this
question

this is helpful -- thanks
You will need the 25-digit CD key for your
Office 97 CD in order to install the software.

i have a product id but it is not 25 digits:
it states:
product id=xxxxx-oem-xxxxxxx-xxxxx
(it is legal -- came with a pc)
?
Updates and
downloads for Office 97 are available from
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/CD010224961033.aspx .

thanks again!

The product ID is not the same as the CD key. I just looked on
my Office 97 Pro CD, and the product key is 11 digits in the form
of xxxx-xxxxxxx (not 25 digits like on newer Office versions).

Your product ID indicates an OEM version, which was provided with
a certain computer by the computer manufacturer, and is only
"legal" if installed on the computer that the software originally
came with. You are not supposed to install an OEM version on a
different computer.

Would the real garfield-n-odie please stand up? This is the second inaccurate
post I have read today from you!

1) Office 97 does *NOT* have a 25-character key - it had a 10 digit numerical
key (123-4567890). Office 2000 was the first version to have a 25-character
alphanumeric key - and, depending on the version, the first to require
activation.

2) There are no updates for Office 97. It's no longer supported and hasn't
been for *FOUR* years! All mainstream support ended 16th February 2001 -
that's nearly 4 and a half years ago! Hot-fix and update support (note that
*support* for hot-fixes and updates, not the supply of hot-fixes and
updates). From the MS product lifecycle page: -

* Office 97 Assisted support options for Office 97 ended on January 16,
2004. Mainstream hotfix support for Office 97 ended on August 31, 2001.
Extended hotfix support ended on February 28, 2002. Self-help online support
will be available for at least one year after assisted support concludes.

So, one year after assisted support takes us to 31 August 2002 - three years
ago.

There are no updates, hotfixes, patches or SPs still available for Office 97.

And I still don't believe you're the *real* g-n-o.

You silly! The *real* Garfield and Odie are cartoon characters. Odie is too
dumb to surf the web and Garfield is too busy eating lasagna. ;-)

If you want to flame someone in this newsgroup for consistently
providing inaccurate information I have a few names for you and g-n-o
isn't one of them. ;-)

I guess you missed his corrected post in the thread.
Office 2000 was the first version to have a 25-character

require
activation.

To be more precise, activation in Office 2000 was only in select
areas, such as Austrailia, rather than version.

Did you happen to check out the link g-n-o provided? Office 97 updates
are still available for download:

The Office 97 CD key is 11 digits as I subsequently posted, not
10 digits as you say, and Office 97 updates ARE still available
at the link I provided. You are SOOOOOOO busted!

Keep up the good work of pointing out everyone's faults without providing
anything useful. Nice job.
