OfficeXP vs. 2002 4 students and teachers (do I need to update?)

I installed this on a nieghbor kids comp. Hes a 16 year old High School student and NEEDS THIS 4 SCHOOL . It installed fine but now he cant get the programs to work correctly. Also I DID NOT install Outlook ( NO INTERNET CONNECTION). It acts like I need to update but all the updates I see are for people that are going to be online. Seems like it would be an easy fix...Heck I can d/l an update for him and put it on a CD...NP there...just figured I'd try here b4 I make the call...TY 4 the help
