Offset with a link

Using the offset function with a link to another workbook
works great until I close the workbooks and reopen the
workbook with the offset functions with links, which
gives #VALUE! for those cells. Using Excel 2002 - help
would be welcome.

Then you have discovered that offset won't work unless link and linked
workbooks are open

Ok. What is the alternative for getting the same result
as the offset function? I want to link to a number of
workbooks without opening them all.
