On Line Status Icons

Patrick Velardi

After using Entourage X for several months, I seem to have lost the On Line
Status icons in my mail boxes. I have the column checked. I can see the
icon in newsgroups and in sent mail, but not in inbox or other local folders
I have created. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Rebuilt the Entourage database, but the On Line Status Icons are still
missing. I now have a "Mail" window, and a "Mail 2" window. Which files
should I delete after the database rebuild? Thanks.

Hi Patrick,

In your first post you said that you had the On Line Status column checked.
I'm wondering now, if you have it checked for *every* folder where you want
to see it. Checking column views for one folder will not carry over to
another (unless you create a subfolder based on it). So check this out
first.

As for deleting files post-rebuild, go into your Microsoft User Data folder>
Office X Identities> Main Identity. You can delete the files with "Old" in
front of them. But...

Did you do just a Typical Rebuild? If so, delete the old files as above.
If you also did an Advanced Rebuild and it didn't fix your problem, you
might want to consider trashing the newly created files instead and changing
the names of the old files back (such as "OldDatabase" to just "Database").
The only reason I suggest this is that you lose things like links when you
do an Advanced Rebuild. Returning to the original files will maintain them.
However...

If the problem still exists after a Typical rebuild and you did not try an
Advanced rebuild, then you should. (Sorry if this sounds confusing.)

Hi Patrick,

I think I may not have been clear in my earlier posts. The On Line Status
icon is visible in each of the folders but the actual symbol no longer
appears in front of each individual message, except my Sent Items folder.

I think I understand now. Do you have your messages set to remain on the
server? This option is set in Tools> Accounts> your account> Options. If
not, then the envelope symbol (that's what you're talking about, right?)
won't show in the On Line Status column unless a message has been only
partly received. If the message isn't on the server, then it isn't on line,
so there's no symbol.

For a partly received message, the symbol will look like a ripped envelope
and if you click on the symbol you will be given options to delete or
receive from the server on the next connect. You can set the size of
messages you want automatically downloaded on the same Options tab indicated
above. (All of this applies to POP accounts by the way.)

If I am still misunderstanding you, sorry, and please try again :).
Also, I followed the instructions below, did an Advanced rebuild, and lost
my subscribed newsgroups. No big deal, but does that sound right to you?

Yes. You don't lose data with an Advanced rebuild, but you do lose things
like links, etc. as you've discovered.

Well, you do lose _some_ data, but it's usually recoverable. You lose the
download cache for newsgroups and IMAP folders. Since the messages are
generally still on the server, you can just download them again. If you
think that you may need some really old messages which may no longer be on
the server, save them by drag/copying them to local Entourage folders before
doing the rebuild.

It all makes perfect sense. Thanks for helping me understand this all a bit
better.
