In OneNote2007 the notebooks listed on the navigation bar, usually down the
right side, have options to be moved up or down the list, but is there a way
to automatically order them alphabetically? I have about 20 notebooks at it
is tough keep track where they are located in the list/bar, or keep them
ordered alphabeticallly by moving them up or down. Thanks.

No, there is no way to sort the notebooks.
It has to be done manually.

Sections and pages can be sorted using the respective PowerToys:

but there is nothing for notebooks.

They easiest way would be to just close all notebooks and then opening
them again in the alphabetical order.
As one normally does leave all notebooks open

Apart from that:
You might reduce the number of notebooks by creating "section groups"
and import the stuff from several notebooks there.

You can also just drag-drop notebooks within the nav pane to reorder
them however you like.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I know and I normally do just that.
However, the OP had complained that this manual sorting was too "tough".

Excellent suggestions for organizing/alphabetizing notebooks: 1) closing all
notebooks and re-opening in alphabetic order, 2) reducing the number of
notebooks by pushing some notebooks down into the "Section Group" level, or
3) sorting notebooks with drag-n-drop. I just applied a new image to a new
hard drive and experienced/realized how much time could be saved
re-organizing OneNote notebooks if a "Sort by Name" option were available.
This option or some user defined scripted ordering technique would also be
nice (optimize OneNote usage) to keep sychronized notebooks on multiple
computers in the same order. I really appreciate the quick feedback and
specific suggestions.
