opening e-mail with attachments

Office 2003 Professional. All updates current. I can NOT
open any e-mail with an attachment of any kind. All other
e-mails work flawlessly. As soon as i click on an e-mail
with ANY kind of attachment, it locks up. I have to close
the program and restart. It will NOT open any e-mail with
an attachment.

To add, I just crashed again, and this time was given the
option to open in safe mode. I did, and I am able to open
attachments. Mailbox size is 92970kb.

At a complete loss to why this is happening. I ran
windows install cleanup, and reinstalled office. no luck

When loading Outlook normally, you cannot open attachments (actually you
have to save them and then open them). When loading Outlook in its safe
mode, you CAN save and open attachments. Ta da! You have your clue.
Safe mode does NOT load any of the add-ins that have been installed into
Outlook. When Outlook opens, it must also load up all add-ins. When
Outlook exits, it must first exit or close all add-ins. So an add-in
that hangs or crashes when it loads or exits will do the same to
Outlook. Since add-ins change the behavior of Outlook, and since the
behavior is correct when the add-ins are NOT loaded (as evidenced when
you start Outlook in safe mode), then the problem is with an add-in.
When loaded in its safe mode, Outlook will NOT load any add-ins.

Check what add-ins you have installed in Outlook. Tools menu ->
Options -> Other -> Advanced.
